A collection of iconic Welsh songs, which is the inspiration for Ballet Cymru choreographers Darius James and Amy Doughty, who have used 11 of the songs from the album to create a unique work especially for their dancers.
The ballet performed sell out shows at venues in Newport, London and Caernarfon, with Cerys herself playing the music live on stage. Ballet Cymru’s TIR continues to show on occasional dates, please check the events page for ticket availability. A track from TIR was also used for this Visit Wales television advert.
Reviews
Tir, being the Welsh word for land, is the title of Cerys Matthews’ recently released album. With it’s traditional folk music, often gritty lyrics, nursery rhymes and hymns from the 18th century, Cerys’ album is, as ever, delightfully eclectic. This collection of songs creates nostalgia for a period I never knew. And the use of English and Welsh somehow conjures up images of grainy pictures of farming families (although this may have something to do with the grainy images that come with the album booklet). I would recommend this album to anyone, welsh speaking or otherwise,it’s an opportunity to learn about the welsh heritage and listen to Cerys Matthews’ addictive vocals. I love it.
This Album is brilliant. I bought two after listening to her interview on Radio 4. My son in law is a fan ever since “Road Rage” when he made the whole family aware of Catatonia. The second purchase was for him on his birthday. The presentation is unique. I love the historical background of the songs, the photographs of a time gone by, the translations, and the ease with which Welsh and English lyrics make sense alongside each other in some of the songs. Cerys’s voice has matured beautifully and the sounds she makes evoke another time. She harmonises so well with Bryn in Migeldi Mageldi and I wish there was more.
